A for Alike #AToZChallenge

Alike or equals?
Women and men are equals.

My daughter is like my son.

She leads her team like a man.

She is strong, confident and bold. Just like a man.

I am sure like me, you have heard these sentences. At home or at work when people compare a woman to a man, they don’t really mean to say anything else other than the female is very good. However, they end up comparing her with the benchmark they have set. A bar that they think, only a man can achieve.

Men or women don’t want to be treated like the other. They wanted to be treated are they are. As equals. Equal responsibilities, equal pay, and equal respect are what both men and women want. No privileges and no special treatments based on the gender.

Let a man be a man and let a woman be who she is. They have their own personality traits and their own strengths. They will do things differently and succeed in what they do. Let’s stop differentiating and let’s start thinking of equality. If we want a world that’s free of any prejudices and biases, it starts from us. Our thoughts and actions will lead us to what we want to see.

By not treating men and women alike but by treating them like equals.

Men are from Earth, women are from Earth. Deal with it.

  1. I love it! This is so true, and something I have been saying for years. Love the George Carlin quote too. I may not have agreed with everything the man said, but he definitely had his moments. 😀

Here is the link to my post for the #AtoZChallenge, my theme will become apparent after a few days (I’m kind of hoping people figure it out on their own…)

  2. This is so very true!
I was raised in a different way, a more Lenni-Lenape way. So leaving that, going out into the world where people didn’t treat each other as equals, blew my mind. The first time I heard an adult call a group of male students “ladies” I was… I was so confused. And the explanation that it was supposed to be a motivating insult made no sense to me whatsoever. I ended up with a week of detention.

  3. I have a very complicated relationship with gender, and I agree – there is so little to gain in comparisons. I’ve especially noticed that those qualities that are held in high regard are always coded as masculine – as though women are incapable of being logical, or strong, or confident, etc. Men, women, and everyone beyond or in-between should be treated as individuals who are equally deserving of rights and respect.

  4. I’m especially annoyed that the favorable traits (the ones to be aspired to) are all coded as masculine (strength, leadership, logic), where as if a man displays a trait coded as “feminine,” it’s seen as a failing (sensitivity, softness, creativity). We’re all complex beings outside of our gender, and should all be treated with equal respect and equal rights. Nice job!

  5. The sad part is that they genuinely believe that the comment puts them in good light. And the idea that they have done a favour to the daughter by thinking of her as a son! God knows how long we will take to get rid of this!

  6. True .. women aretyring to run a man’s race by the standards set by men. We will only tire out. Need to get more authentic and set our own milestones.

  7. Okay I am just going to sit next to Sreesha and applaud this post. I get so pissed when this kind of comparison is made Parul. I get a lot of she is like S’s father too, and it irritates me, because that is not what equality is about. So, thank you for saying this – Equality is not about comparing one with the other.

  8. Feminism goes out the window when a 28 year old purser refuses to help you put your bag up in the overhead bin just because you are a 60 year old woman. “Do it yourself” I was told and I realised feminism had won us a losing battle
