Today is 3.14.16, Pi Day – a day that’s celebrated annually around the world by Mathematicians. The date today resembles the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter approximating to 3.14159.
On this day, eating pies, throwing pies and even talking about the significance of the number π counts as celebration. Not just that, today happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday and that adds to the fun of the day.
Pi is also used in everyday life and I dug up the internet for some interesting facts to share:
- Look up the curvature of a rainbow
- In the pupil of the eye
- Have you seen ripples when a raindrop falls into water?
- Population dynamics – statisticians used Pi there.
- The structure/function of DNA has a relation with Pi.
- The pendulums for clocks are designed using Pi.
So, Pi is just not to solve those mathematics questions. Like any other scientific fact, it’s all around us.
Did you know there is a square root day too? Well, it’s on 4.4.16!
Writing for #MicroblogMondays today.
Woow!
Never knew this fact about today’s date! Thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Rajiv

Now that’s a bunch of trivia I was not aware of. For some reason the moment someone says Pi, I remember that movie with Irrfan Khan & the tiger. Can’t recall the name! Happy Pi Day I guess 🙂

It sure sounds like a Mathematical monday. I realised about the Pi Day thanks to my daughter’s school. Those are some interesting facts. Sharing them with my daughter now. 😀

I had no idea about Square Root day – thank you so much for mentioning it. Oh, and jinx! I did a post about Pi Day too! 🙂
Happy Rounded Pi/Einstein’s birthday to you!

I knew today was Pi Day, but never knew about Square Root Day. Luckily advance warning has given me the ability to celebrate it. Thank you!

Square root day is a new one. Interesting facts here. In recent times Pi brings to mind Life of Pi, the book and the movie 😀

Oh yeah! The book and the movie 🙂

I knew it was Round Pi Day. I think because of Tracy York up there ::waving:: I LOVE that there’s a square root day.
And people think mathematics is boring. Ha!
(Going to buy apple pie later.)

I didn’t know all those things about pi. And cool about square root day. Though depending on how one’s part of the world does the date, it might also be called square day.
Craving for cherry pie…

Pi day and square root day appear interesting. I have not been a fan of pi in maths (you know the tangential incline everything in maths made with my round head) and have never liked eating pies too. But throwing the pie will make an interesting sport.

Thank you for commemorating Pi Day. It has been a long time since I last used pi in maths.

Facebook was littered with posts about Pi Day, and the trolls about it. They purposely kept confusing Pi Day with Pie Day, and were posting pics of lovely pies.
This post celebrated the real Pi Day, and not it’s homophonic twin. 😀

Your brought back the nightmare that maths was to me! This Pi has been my undoing so many times. I’m quite relieved I’m through with it.

Curious to know how pendulums for clocks are designed using Pi.

Remember there used to be a formula that tied to the length of the pendulum and the radius? May be that?

Pi day only brings back nightmares that mathematics turned into for me. Just glad that I have nothing to do with it any longer. It can stay in the rainbows and the pendulums.
