Street and Space

A couple of weeks back on a beautiful Saturday morning, VT and I were on a drive looking out for a good breakfast joint. When we reached a big crossing and saw that the traffic signal was beaming RED, VT decided to stop the car behind the vehicle ahead of us. That space was sort of unevenly occupied by a lot of big and small vehicles and if VT had tried to sneak in that little space, he could have but we love our car and the space it needs. So we decided to leave a good 5 feet room while we waited for the signal to go green.

In a matter of say 20 seconds, the kind of stares and expressions we got from people around was terrifying. Honking at us followed and I felt we had committed a crime like that of jumping the signal. A guy who was riding a two-wheeler even came and told us through actions that we had left more space than required. On the verge of getting scornful, he even asked us to move.  Another 20 seconds, the traffic signal turned green and we zoomed off. That incident made me think over the fact that as Indians on the roads, how impatient we get. We don’t value space and we can’t wait for the person ahead of us to change gears or say kick start a bike.

Our road and traffic sense needs a lot of positive effort from each one of us. Change begins from within and not by recommending it to others. Unnecessary honking, zooming, not stopping for pedestrians who trying to find their way out, overtaking from the wrong side and so many other signs of road rage are not good for our health! They stress us out and after a long day’s work, no one wants any sort of agitation and that too on the road.

Now that's what we call "Bumper to Bumper" traffic..

This picture is from a parking lot and we need patience right from this leg of the journey back home. What do you think?

  1. Two-three days back a guy in motorcycle with earphones plugged into his dumb earcanals speedily overtook me with continuosly honking as if nobody was giving him way. He was continuosly pressing the horn to let others know that the boss was coming and as boss was unable to hear others’ horns others were supposed to hear him louder! I had to leave my work behind and catch him like a hormone charged high school teen and shower some sarcasm on his dim wit 😦
