Did you know this about Christmas?

Christmas is over but the festivities aren’t. This Sunday Punch, I have got a short video for you from the History Channel on facts about Christmas that you did not know.

A sneak peek before you get in to the video:

  • Jesus Christ was born on December 25th some 2000 years ago
  • There is no mention of this date in The Bible
  • The tradition of giving gifts on Christmas dates back to the days when baby Jesus was given gifts after his birth
  • The character of Santa Claus is based on Dutch Saint Nicholas Myra known as SinterKlass in those days
  • A coca-cola commercial showed Santa Claus wearing red and white and that became popular

I did not know a lot of things in this video. Did you know?

This Sunday Punch #52 is the last one for this year. This has been a regular weekly feature on this blog for over a year now. Would you want to me continue? How would you like link-ups for Sunday Punch? Interested? Let me know in the comments below and I would be happy to host something for you readers. 🙂

  1. Yes, there is no record of Jesus’ exact birth date. Most Christian celebrations, including Easter too, are chosen to replace the existing ‘pagan’ festivals! Those in power rule – as we’ve seen with Good Governance Day! 😉

  2. I too have read an article or two along the same lines with a few ‘unknown’ facts.
Of course, as Cory said – they’re all just replacing old festivals with newer ones.
    Interesting video nonetheless, Parul
Hope you had an enjoyable Christmas.

  3. Yes I always knew about the pagan origins of Christmas. Dec 25 symbolises the beginning of the return of the Light – a pagan tradition. After winter solstice (Dec 22, the shortest day) the daylight begins to get longer and longer, and that’s why Dec 25 is called in hindi as Bada Din, the actual day when the days begin to get longer. No link with birth of Jesus.

  4. Interesting video, Parul. I am a little surprised that there is no exact date of birth mentioned. I thought that the whole BC and AD thing was based on it. Will have to look it up now.

  5. yea.. knew that there is no record of Jesus’ exact birth. And Dec 25th is celebrated to coincide with the pagan ritual of the beginning of the return of the Light.
They say that it was done to wipe our the pagan traditions that existed which worshipped goddesses and the elements of nature. (There are so many conflicting views and articles that its hard to weed out the truth from the fiction)
