World Environment Day 2018

The World Environment Day is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. It is celebrated on June 5th every year.

We all love the blessings of Mother Nature. Mountains, rivers, trees, blooming flowers and all that bounty that surrounds us. But nothing remains for ever. If we don’t take care of our environment, we will end up ruining it.

Did you know India is the global host for the World Environment Day 2018? The theme of this year is #BeatPlasticPollution. Plastic is a menace and here are a few things that I do for the environment.

  1. At home, I don’t use plastic bottles for water.
  2. I carry my groceries in a cloth bag.
  3. For take aways, I carry my box and don’t ask for a food box.
  4. I don’t ask for a customer copy when I swipe my credit card.
  5. I have said no to printed phone bills.
  6. No point printing emails and documents that I have to read at work.
  7. I don’t carry plastic cutlery to work.
  8. I save electricity when not using.
  9. Using water judiciously.
  10. I segregate waste at home.

It has been raining in Bangalore and one evening while enjoying my ginger tea, I spotted this beautiful bird from my balcony. I was lucky that it did not fly away and I was able to quickly get my camera. At that moment I realized that if there were no trees, where would the birds live? How would people find shade and oxygen? We will not be able to conserve the soil and eventually the earth would become so hot that survival will be impossible.

World Environment Day

So my ask of you is to celebrate our environment with me. Share a picture of what environment means to you and link it back to this post. If you like, you can also use the badge below.

  1. Plastic pollution is growing in leaps and bounds and creating quite a havoc everywhere. Have been reading about whales dying with tons of plastic garbage in their stomachs. It’s time we beat this menace of plastic pollution. Pointer number 3 is something that I need to work on. Thanks for the nudge, Parul!

  2. There is a lot to learn from you. We are usually so careless about the environment, thanks to people like you who still care. Lovely post.

  3. I do a bunch of stuff and have cut down on the usage of plastic at my end But I am worried about all the plastic that we consume that is in the form of packaging material. Look at the plastic waste that courier generate. Also all food grains come packaged in plastic covers. In Bangalore we still see ban on plastic covers. On my recent trip to Mumbai, I did not see even this much effort.

  4. Segregating waste is made compulsory in Bangalore by BBMP and thus my apartment had to enforce it 3 years ago. This is how I learnt doing it and did it passionately. Also, when the Dilli wale used to visit me, I made them do it as well. They found it a great headache and felt grateful they were not living in Bangalore and I too felt the same they were not 😛 I am aware I always tend to digress from the main issue 🙂 The bird in the picture is a pretty one and it is a marvel that you spotted it inspite of its green colour. I must applaud you for doing a great deal of things for the environment. This reminds me a line from Paulo Coelho’s book ‘The winner stands alone’ where he talked about everyone talking about save the earth while the reality is all people are concerned is about saving themselves. ‘Save the earth’ is just a feeling of novelty. The earth was in existence before the dinosaurs, after the dinosaurs, before the first human beings and it will continue to be in existence afterwards too.
