Keyboard Warriors

“Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one but they think each others stink.” – Simone Elkeles

As soon as I typed the above, I know this post is an opinion but now that I am at it, I will let it flow.

Over the last two weeks, I have heard the word ‘keyboard warriors’ multiple times. So I looked up and found the meaning:

  • A person who makes abusive or aggressive posts on the Internet, typically one who conceals their true identity.
  • A person who behaves aggressively and/or in an inflammatory manner in online text-based discussion media, but at the same time does not behave similarly in real life, potentially due to cowardice, introversion or shyness. (Source – Wiktionary)
  • Keyboard Warriors are generally identified by unnecessary rage in their written communications, and are regarded as ‘losers’ by other virtual identities on the internet. (Source – Urban Dictionary)

It’s not hard to identify keyboard warriors. Twitter is their usual hangout. On some occasions, you can find them on Facebook too. If you are still wondering where to meet these people, look up a trending topic or a news piece on social media and you will be all set.

Abusive and derogatory language, opinions, finger pointing, mudslinging and all ways that you can think of to prove points are the tools these warriors use. The result is unnecessary trolling, defamation and may negatively impact mental health.

I don’t spend a lot of time on social media. I have to use the media to share my work and photography but I refrain from sharing opinions and thoughts. If you value your time and energy, that would be my advise to you too. Which like you know, comes free.

What’s your opinion? Don’t worry, everyone has one.

  1. I liked this opinion of yours, Parul. And you are right. Using social media for work and for some fun is good. But stay away from warriors and warrioring will be my free advise. It isn’t worth anyone’s time or effort. It’s shocking to read how mindlessly these warriors type away their wisdoms on trending topics and trolling others.

  2. I look for some sane voices among the crap. Of course keyboard warriors have made it so hard but without some of the activist to shine light on certain ideas and facts , it would be a much darker place.

  3. Haha, Parul. True, social media is full of hate. Let that alone. You’ve got WhatsApp warriors too who shame you on a group for your personal choices. Taking personal digs, calling names & all that garbage. They think they’re fighting a guerrilla ‘war’. LOL

Unlike a few years ago till today, Facebook is also now a ground for ridiculous ‘battles’ over which political party we support. Say I support Party X & you support Y. We’ll be fine as long as we ourselves know why we support them. However, as per today’s scenario, we should be unfriending each other after we turn our voting choices into an ugly mud slinging session over why the ‘undesired’ party is bad, rather “Why YOUR party is more bad.”

Loved your short yet crisp post on this.

    1. I am glad you shared your thoughts Ashwini. You are right. Things have gone from bad to ugly on Whatsapp too. Political digs are most people’s favorite indoor sport.
      Thank you for stopping by!

  4. Uff what a topic to explore Parul- brave of you!! These vitriolic characters are everywhere now online just to “express” their opinions. I too figure they are lonely attention seeking idiots who think the virtual world is all they have got.
