Oh Gods!

Disclaimer : I am a God-fearing person and I strongly believe in one super power, destiny and karma. I am also religious and I worship every day. This post is not to undermine any of the beliefs or hurt any religious sentiments. These are my thoughts and I am not shy to share!

Surprising to know but there are 33 million Gods in Hindu mythology. Ask a common man and it will get difficult to name just 20!

The movie “Oh! My God” raised so many relevant issues prevalent today and it will not be wrong to say that temples and Gods have been made a business. From Varanasi to Tirupati, I have visited many and hence I say so.I do not know of any scripture that asked us to not eat non-veg on a certain day or one that instructs a female to not go to a temple or step near a God if it’s her menstrual cycle time. God never asked us to not fast as a way to worship him. He never said if you hadn’t washed your hands, don’t take any prasad. Oh! so many examples!

I went to Kurukshetra and heard that since it’s a holy city, pizzas are not served with a non-veg topping. There are so many restaurants that serve non-veg but none on pizza! In Amritsar, every Vaishno Dhaba is pure veg (though the owner goes to a Punjabi one for his portion of Butter Chicken). Many of us say no to egg on a Tuesday but are open to having a cake (not eggless) without saying no!

Isn’t this hypocrisy??

  1. I liked the movie, “Oh! My God” and I agree with you about religion in general becoming a business. The interesting things you mention about non-veg/ veg and “cleanliness” are all societal expectations that have become “religious beliefs.” An example outside of Hinduism would be in Catholicism during Lent you have to fast for 40 days and abstain from meat on fridays. This is not found in any Scripture, it was suggested by one man hundreds of years ago; yet many believe it to be a vital religious duty.

    1. Thanks for taking time out to read through the post! Interesting to know about the other religions on this topic. Most of these beliefs are man-made and scriptures on the other hand tell a different tale!
