When I first read the “Phenomenal Woman” I did not know who Maya Angelou was. I had never seen a computer that time and hence Googling was not an option in my world. I read the poem when it was shared by a teacher and being a teenager it made me introspect and see where I am headed.
What do I focus on when I grow up? Is it about appearances or is it about the values that a woman upholds? Is it about how pretty she looks when she smiles or is it about the knowledge that reflects when she speaks? Should she know how to dress up or should she know how to love? Should be a caring daughter or should she just step out of the house and forget where she came from? Zillion questions but just one answer – A phenomenal woman is everywhere around – every single woman out there who holds her head high, values her life, cares for loved ones around and stands for her rights! A woman is different in the way she thinks and accepts life – how she manages to balance her emotional quotient and her practicality. How she instills the right values in her children and believes in them at every stage of her life. How she sacrifices her own career to support her husband.
Times have changed, decades have passed but one thing that still stands firm is the strength of a woman. Today – she is a working mother, working homemaker, single mother and she faces many challenges while multi-tasking but keeps going on. She doesn’t depend on anyone to get groceries at home. She clicks and buys – home supplies or just anything. She travels abroad alone and is confident that there will be help at home for her little one. She has a mind of her own and speaks up for what is fair and just.
Every woman out there in the world is just phenomenal in all aspects. What is needed is a little self-belief and faith in her own abilities. A “can do” attitude and moving away from people who pull her down. She needs to realize that life is too short for petty things and may be what she frets about today won’t even matter in years to come. She needs to live her dreams and start living for herself before her parents, husband, child or any one else.
I am also a woman and I try to break the molds every single day – some days, it makes an impact and some days I fail. But getting up with the same zeal and strength everyday is all that matters and that is something only a phenomenal woman can do. Who is a Phenomenal Women after all? – that’s YOU!
Note: This post is a commitment to an uninterrupted writing practice. The time taken to write this post was non stop 20 mins excluding editing. I have also used the prompt on Maya Angelou shared as Wednesday Prompt 2014 #18.
Not just women.. but I would say every human is phenomenal …

Wow, this is so different from your other days’ posts. I guess music brings out the seriousness in you, and forces you to introspect. It was a pleasure to read it – it’s much shorter than what I put out and it gains from its brevity.

Thank you!
The point was that I don’t listen to a lot of English songs – I haven’t moved an inch from Bryan Adams..Old Gen you see!! And you know Hindi ones – picking up 3 is so difficult! So this was pretty easy.

My first exposure to Ms. Angelou’s work was reading “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” when I was in junior high school. I have been a fan ever since!
I enjoyed your post and appreciated your thoughts.

“I am also a woman and try to break the molds every single day – some days, it makes an impact and some days I fail”.. Very moving line.
I guess we all try to pave the way in our own idiosyncratic way; sometimes we succeed and sometimes we don’t. But hopefully that shouldn’t stop is from carrying on.
