This article was written a couple of months back for my school’s magazine and the audience – school children! Now that the school decided to publish this article in this year’s magazine, here it goes for you all!
It feels like yesterday when I was in school. My life was different then. It feels like yesterday when the only stress that I had was to do well in exams. The only peer pressure I had was to get good marks and help my friends to do well in tests and exams. The only surprises used to be the sudden surprise tests and yes, I hated them! My day at school was max 6 hours long and I could still catch up some sleep after lunch. Arranging school bag according to timetable was the most important preparation for the next day and Monday seating rotations were not always fun! 15 years ago, I was in school..
Today, I am an independent working woman and I owe a lot to my school. The most formative years of our lives are the ones we spend in school. School days are the ones which lay the foundation for tomorrow and at school, you not just learn subjects, you learn lessons. Some simple things that I still follow at work and they help me even today are:
- Be on time! Yes, it matters a lot – you cannot afford to be late to meetings!
- Ask questions – Who wants an employee who just nods and never utters a word!
- Perform or perish – Unless you are prepared, you won’t perform and if you don’t, you know what will happen!
- Friendship – Friends or foes, at the end of the day, we write our own answer sheets. Copying never works!
Life is different today. Before I leave for work, I need to ensure that my house is set in order and we are ready to handle another day to deliver our best at work. There is a calendar to manage my day but I need to manage my time! There are no summer and winter vacations. Holi is without colors and sometimes Diwali without lights. But then, work is worship.
I know things change and people move on. When my mother who happens to be a teacher asked me to write something for school magazine, I suddenly had so much to say. However, you will experience these same things as you grow older. You might feel all this as not relevant but if you just remember some key lessons of life and in my opinion if you do that, you will never regret:
- Be true to yourself – it’s your life and you have the reins in your hands
- Follow your passion – Do what you want to do and do it 100%
- Never give up – unless you fail, you will never know what it is to get up and succeed.
- Stay positive – it ensures things stay positive and a silver lining certainly pops up – remember every night is followed by a day
- Take pride in all that you do – if your choice was justified by your values and understanding, keep your head high
Tomorrow, when you get into a college and later start looking for a job – remember that when one door of opportunity closes, somewhere another one opens. Sometimes, taking a step back and talking to people who care for you matters a lot. We cannot choose our parents or siblings. Our family is what was given to us by God but we can choose our own family of friends who will stand by your side, in all circumstances. But it also means that you need to be cautious while choosing friends. Give every relationship some time and you will get to understand what it brings in future. Tomorrow, you will step into my shoes and you will be in the same position as I am today. So, live your life, do your best, trust yourself and decide what’s right for you!
One last word – Parents and teachers talk a lot – but all that they say, makes a lot of sense and trust me, my Mum did not ask me to write this line 😉

Alas! coming back but too late, should have posted when first time,Mam asked you to write some article.
Good one!! back to basic days, sometime feel like to give finishing touch to what all we have left in childhood, whether correct phrases or search of vocabulary or more healthy food and physique.every thing is matter of past and there is grim conscience that parents and teachers were true.
These days are no more what I feel like now is to give same devotions and dedication to our kids what we received from our parents. In this busy and orthodox living style we must not bribe our kids with gifts video games, because we are busy and have no time but to come out with true belonging and devotion.this is what I believe in now and this is what I am gonna going to try.
Yadav sir talked alot in peculiar accent but trust me we need that accent now. 🙂 Days are gone and will never come back.

Thanks Asad for taking time out to read the post!
I agree with you – bribing will never instill value of something earned and deserved. We were naive and are so are today’s children. Hence this was an attempt to share something with children 🙂

The only herculean task I had was to get up on a Monday morning (and all the mornings that follow) and reach school before time 😀 Good read! Now that I think, it’s good that I didn’t listen to them. Life would be boring otherwise 😛 On a serious note, yes, it all makes sense 🙂

I am still teaching and I believe after passing out from the school children will recollect those affectionate preachings . But whenever any student after 7 – 10 yrs calls me and asks ‘ mam did u recognize me , u have taught me in x B ‘?—– trust me that day I feel real happiness .
