Movember is Here

This week, I was in a video call with our partners from US and the only guy on the other side of the team, MM looked a little different. Casual conversations, well-being of each other, the snow storms there, thanksgiving week  ahead, black Friday, holiday season, before the work stuff started and I had by then thought of writing about this new learning from our casual catch up – “Movember”.

A man essays many roles in his life – that of a father, son, brother, husband, boyfriend and most of the times men face bashing cos they can’t multi task, shopping is not their cup of tea, they find it hard to enjoy romantic movies or novels, they don’t have a shoe fetish, a single wallet can last a decade, same trouser in three colors is normal and everyday can be a white shirt day, cricket match whether live or highlights is best thing ever and what not! Men are just wired differently and so are women. They coexist and that’s more harmonious than anything ever. They are emotional but do not share it, they feel panic and stress but do not express it, they try hard to keep the family away from all troubles, they lift heavy boxes knowing that their backs are not in great shape too. All men are awesome and I am glad that I have the right ones in my life.

Movember is an annual event that involves growing Moustaches during the 30 days of November and hence the name – Movember to raise awareness about men’s health, testicular and prostate cancer, mental health issues and everything else under the Sun that is important to keep men cognizant of their health, importance of staying fit and as an outcome living longer. Though these stats reflect US data, I am sure India would have similar numbers and these numbers are not great. They are disturbing and show that a lot needs to be done to ensure that men stay healthy.

So the idea is to use Movember as that time of the year when specific initiatives are carried out to encourage open conversations about men’s health, possible cancers, early diagnosis and to bring about a change where men could share about their health and visit an expert as and when required. Mo Bros (Movember Brothers are men who support the foundation) grow moustaches which is a visible change to a man’s appearance and this is enough to spark a meaningful conversation or raise funds to help a non- Mo Bro understand the concept, come together as one  larger family and fight it out.

A lot is available over the internet for all of us to read through and see the positives of such an initiative. As a Mo Sista wanting the men in my life to be healthy, I wish we could have something like this in India too exclusively for men!

After all health is wealth!

I am participating in National Blog Posting Month – NaBloPoMo, and this is Post #19, a pledge to write daily during November to hone my skills, challenge myself, and taking this blog to the next level. Wish me luck and share ideas that you would want to read!

  1. Hmm… thanks for being kind… I see a genuine lack of kindness in online women towards men… reasons are many- some are touchy, some are true, rest baseless… Thanks Parul for not being miser 😛
You know nowadays a lot of men are victim of depression and mostly they don’t seek for prof help unlike women…
Most of cardio ailments love to attack men only… Sigh……………….. 😦
