
Bangalore feeds its people well when it comes to traditional food. The darshinis, traditional restaurants or the many other eating joints serving authentic kannada food are all around. From the ones easy on the pocket to the ones that need you to shell out a few thousands for a meal for two – there is enough room for all and sundry.
The charm of the food in the city is such that folks like me who have been around for a decade miss our regular doses of idli and dosa when we go up the north. Going to a restaurant and asking for a kannada thali in Bangalore seems like the normal thing to do when one would like to have the rasam, the payasa, the curd rice and the sambhar. The regular breakfast options are many – many varieties of dosa, rava idli, bonda soup, mangalore buns, avalakki and shavige bath, pongal etc. The ragi balls are so healthy that young children are taught to develop a taste for it. The flavorful food is healthy and good to taste at the same time. The rich tempering of curry leaves, mustard seeds and grated coconut has an aroma that can attract you from a distance.
The most relished varieties of rice available in kannada cuisine include lemon rice and tamarind rice (Chitranna and puliyogare in kannada). Now a days, it’s very easy to prepare such food at home with the spices readily available as a pack. One could simply mix this pack with cooked rice along with tempered spices and the authentic food is at your dinner table. Rice varieties are good as lunch and comfortable to carry to work or any other place.
Talking about desserts, the payasa is most common one and again can be prepared with different variations. The sweet pongal and kesari bath are other desserts that are popular. It is also used as prasadam in temples.
The local delicacies in Bangalore are all about taste and health. While an idli is healthy breakfast, the curd rice for dinner is light and easy to digest. If rasam helps you fight cold, the majjige (butter milk) is well known for its many health benefits. Because the focus of the food here is vegetables and spices, the oil content is controlled and certainly an added advantage.
All in all, your platter can never be incomplete when you are fond of the Kannada cuisine in Bangalore like I am!

Me too, 99% of my time in India I was eating dosa, idli, bondu soup and many of those chutnies until my relatives resigned to bring to the most awesome jaunts in the city!!! 😀

I had been in Bangalore for 4years. I must say Bangalore is amazing for food varieties and restaurants. And how can we forget 99 varieties dosa’s.. And Parul you did a justice to this blog.
