Who is an Urban Woman? I have written about women who inspire me, I have written about my Mum and my Nani, and throughout April, I have been talking about women issues and some food for thought. So to begin the post on Urban Woman, I just did a google search on urban woman, and the results shocked me. I am aware that the urban dictionary is the one for slang words and phrases but I never expected google to thrown up few top search results telling me things I would hate to hear about women.
Quoting any of that here would be unfair to this online space that is home for my thoughts so for today, let’s look at ourselves and see how can we turn around these myths about women.
- She dates or marries a guy for his money
- All she wants is a social circle
- She hates in-laws from the word go
- She think too high of herself to treat others well
- She shows off within and out of her circle of friends
An urban woman is not as these myths project. She is one who has learnt to find her way. She knows when to raise her hand and grab an opportunity and when to say no when she really wants to. The one who trusts herself more than others and the one who values the person behind a face. She is the one who wants to try before she quits and the one who respects every human being.
The one who wants to plan her life ahead and the one who wants to take each day as it comes. The one who reading this post or the one who is penning her own. The one who wants to leave the world a better place and the one who is guiding others. The one who doesn’t want a woman tag to get things done and the one who wants equality. The one who respects choices and is willing to make her own.
The woman of today is the PHENOMENAL YOU.

It is not fair, but the term ‘Urban Woman’ does come with a lot of negative connotations. So I am not surprised about the Google results. Your last paragraph does justice to the Urban Women.

Well said, Parul. A woman is one who doesn’t need the tag for making choices or get things done and yet wants equality. The term “Urban Woman” has different meanings and yet we don’t see such derivations being used for men. Irony !

It was shocking to know the definition of Urban woman. Where did these myths come from? Probably all of us who consider ourselves as urban women should write more about changing the myths then only the Google search results would alter.

When I read the title, I did a google search as I wasn’t familiar with the term. I too was shocked, though more so disappointed in what I read as you did. I hope this post climbs to the top in not only empowering woman but changing negative stereotypes of women. A post well-deserved to be read and respected. Thanks again for sharing Parul. 🙂 ❤

I refuse to Google the term now, because I prefer your definition. Though honestly before that I just thought it was a fashion term, or a geographical one.

I loved your words. So powerful and inspiring. That’s the kind of women we see around us. Be it urban or non-urban (if that’s a term). I don’t know why people keep on judging a women’s lifestyle and giving terms like these. And that makes me wonder if there’s a word for men as well !! No one points at men, do they?
