National Girlfriends’ Day

Did you know August 1st is celebrated as National Girlfriends’ Day?

I learnt this very recently and what impressed me most that though this is a day to celebrate female friendship, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Support your girlfriends by helping them stay safe and live well”.

We all agree that health is important but how many of us and more so females take good care of health? Almost every day, I hear someone neglecting her health for excuses like that of lack of time, too much to do at home, feeding children or packing meals and fruits for husband. She thinks of all the loved ones every single day but never about herself. She over eats food to finish up, she remains hungry cos it’s time to put the child to sleep, while the husband goes for a swim she prepares the meal for the family, she just keeps on neglecting her self. And not once but almost always.

First, she needs to think that her health is as important as the rest of the family’s. Second, she needs to know that if she is not healthy, she will not be able to take care of her family. It’s in her own best interest that her health becomes her own priority.

What to do?

  • Understand that your body needs your care, attention and time.
  • Watch what you eat, balance your diet with the right mix of nutrients
  • Ensure you get a little bit of physical activity every day.

Buddy up with your friend/partner. It helps if you have someone who can ask you if you binged on that junk food or did you step out for a walk. Do it together – that’s even better. When I was down with my slipped disc and had a tough time with my health, my doctor said,“If you respect your body, your body will respect you.”

So it has to start at an individual level and anything that you do for 21 days will become a habit that you won’t ever want to part ways with.

I recently came across an infographic created by Oscar, a tech-based health insurance company and it was so relevant. They really believe in empowering their members to take control of their health with the various tools they have available through their own app! This company is based in the US with health insurance plans in New York and New Jersey for those of you who may be in the area, but I am sure this would work for Indian women too.

  1. This post reminds me to remain consistent with my walks and for fixing up appointment for the various tests which I keep putting off.

  2. Parul, I never knew such a day exist. Thank you for sharing the information. Well, I can say my best female friend is now also my wife and I try my best to keep her healthy and fit. I am not a health-freak, but I still gather lot of information on health which I pass it on to her as and when possible.

  4. Actually I came to know about this day only through Twitter :P. Whatever be the reason it was started, your post is so true about how Mothers neglect their health just to see their husbands and children happy and satisfied all day everyday. Though such selflessness should be always lauded, it may get quite problematic health wise and that’s where the infographic roadmap is so perfect and must be followed.

  5. Oh yes, we women tend to neglect our bodies so often. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. My grandfather used to share this सात सुख which should be the philosophy of our life. It says…पहला सुख – निरोगी काया …. It is so important to take care of ourselves.
