Lensational – Empowering women through creativity

Do you have a camera at home lying in a drawer somewhere eating dust cos you prefer using your phone to click pictures?

Do you believe that a picture speaks a thousand words?

Do you know that photography is a trainable skill and can be learnt? At least the basics and how to get the settings right?

How would you feel if I tell that you that as many as 200 women (and counting) from developing nations have learnt how to use a camera and click pictures?

Do you know what are these pictures being used for?

These pictures that depict lives through the eyes of women in developing nations give them an opportunity to explore their creative self. The pictures clicked by these women are

  • Displayed via exhibitions in public spaces
  • Modified to postcards and other formats for retail consumption

Women get to tell stories through the pictures they click and is a creative way to  generate a source of income.

All this is possible through the efforts of Lensational, a social enterprise which aims to empower women in developing countries economically and emotionally through equipping them with digital cameras and photography training.

What I love most about this initiative is the idea and intent to do good. Many times, we want to do a lot to help others lead a better life but are bound by various challenges and time constraints. The youth-led team of Lensational has broken all these myths for me. Their endeavor tells me that no task is less when it comes to making a difference.

When I was reading about the Lensational Team and checking out the pictures clicked by women, I was amazed at the talent and the focus to see mundane things differently and capture it in a frame.

Check out the portfolio and if you intend to buy, go ahead. 50% of what you pay directly goes to the photographer.

Empowering women through photography is not just an innovative idea but also a well thought and executed initiative.

For Day 12 of NaBloPoMo and NoMo, I am sharing about a social enterprise.

  1. Oh! Very interesting Parul dear. Just a reminder of how the blogosphere enlightens us in more ways than one. I would’ve never known about an enterprise like this hadn’t you written about it. Good job! How did you stumble upon them?
