For me it started with Orkut and that time I was unaware of the impact social media could have in our lives. But then came Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and I loved picking all that up to get connected with a virtual world. I hadn’t started blogging when I created my account on these social media and over a period of time I realized I was comfortable having a personality out there.
Today at work, I was talking to a peer about Twitter and that got me thinking on a couple of things about this particular social media.
- You need not have followers to be able to follow what you like.
- Choose from a variety of areas like sports, news, social work, celebrities, fun, jokes, poetry and make the most of what keeps you interested.
- Those perky one-liners are not my cup of tea either – retweets are absolutely fine.
- You can get your daily dose of current affairs – it’s quick and reliable.
- Trends tell you what’s making the news.
- Unlike Facebook – you don’t need anyone to accept your friend request – just follow them.
- And it’s okay to follow random people as long as their tweets are interesting or uninteresting.
- No need to show your personal self to the world – your profile picture could be as random as mine currently.
- Thank God there are no check-ins.
- With so many services and brands on this media, I find it a good platform to raise an issue. The work gets done faster.
- Sharing is easy – no pressure of posting vacation pictures!
I can add more but the idea is that if you haven’t explored Twitter, try it out. It’s a nice place to hang out and a lot of insomniacs like me venture out when the world is asleep. So, you will never be lonely.
One piece of advise – It’s not Tinder so please don’t try to find your next date as you tweet!
A few years ago I was an absolute Twitter fanatic, but I’ve fallen away from it quite a bit since then as my life circumstances changed. Still, it’s a great platform!

That’s a thought. I never did take to twitter though I’ve learnt to get comfortable with FB. Must give it a go again.

Oh really? Do try. Pretty please? It’s not as bad and as vague as it sounds.

Twitter is great for getting the message out, unfortunately you also have a lot of trolls, and of late the religious fundamentalist variety are getting really obnoxious. It’s as if they’ve been employed by a particular political party, I don’t have to mention. I spend about 15 mins each day on Twitter.

I’ve been on Twitter since 2009, but only started using it the last few months or so. Actively, I mean.
In fact, I enjoy it more than Facebook. It’s less intrusive and also helps you get a tougher skin in the process 🙂

Yes, it’s much less intrusive. As Shailaja said in her FB status today – the DM doesn’t even show up a delivery/seen note. So comforting that is .

It is a fun place to hang out, especially because you can drop in and out as time permits. And you never feel like you missed something.

I find Twitter more interesting than Facebook. And there was a time when I’d spend every free minute reading tweets on my phone. I like the fun and wit along with current news, views that range from one extreme to another and much more on Twitter.

Agree with you there. A range of topics and so much more on Twitter 🙂

I have not yet joined the Twitter bandwagon, but your post is making me think about trying it out! My assistant principal actually said Twitter is a great place to find teaching ideas and wisdom, and I do love things I see put up on Facebook from twitter, the funny tweets at least. You have inspired me to check it out, even though I shudder to think of adding more social media to my time slots! 🙂

Oh! I have always been a big fan of Twitter more than any other social network :). Lol! I have also seen a lot of people trying to find their next date through Twitter. Interestingly, I have heard of cases where people have actually fallen in love and got married after meeting first on Twitter :P.
