Hong Kong – Shopping in Mong Kok

It’s been almost of month of my return from Hong Kong and as it is with every travel, the stories live in memories and pictures. As life settles down, spurts of experiences are narrated during conversations and the heart feels full having a chance to travel to explore something new.

My travel list had Mong Kok on it as I knew it would bring the fun part to the whole trip- shopping and striking a good bargain. So one of the weekends was set apart to check out the area and get something back home.

Mong Kok has got itself a name in the world and how? According to the Guinness Book of Records, Mongkok is the most densely populated place on the planet, squeezing in over 130,000 people per km sqaure. You do get to feel the population density the moment you step out of the MTR.  But what’s the fun in street shopping without having to brush shoulders with locals and getting a deal for what looks good but is fake?

Couple of things you should know before you head out to shop.

  • Have time on your hand to explore and then buy from the shop that gives you the best price.
  • Don’t buy from the first shop you stop at.
  • Bargain. Bargain. Bargain.Branded stuff that you will see is all fake but if you do want to sport a LV bag and can’t afford an original, Mong Kok is the place.
  • We met a shop owner who started negotiating the price with us in Hindi. Don’t be fooled over with that.
  • If you want souvenirs to take back, get them from here.
  • Everything under the Sun is sold – electronics, birds and flowers – it’s a market for almost everything.
  • Carry water – if you keep yourself hydrated it will help you shop.
  • Watch out for street performances – I got to see hip-hop and some really cool balancing skills.
  • Go with your female friends – men may get bored!

Some pictures to give you a flavor of the place.

So, if you plan a trip to Hong Kong, don’t miss out on Mong Kok. Shopping is fun and this place will make it even more fun.

For Day 28 of NaBloPoMo and NoMo, I am sharing one last travel tale from my recent trip to Hong Kong.

  3. Looks like a really nice place to catch in the sights and sounds of HK and also do some shopping. I came across a few such places during my time in Singapore :D.
