Last July when I started taking Kannada lessons on whatspp, I realized that the language is close to Sanskrit and not that hard to learn.

I now know basic words and it’s fun learning from others when they correct my mistakes. The best part is feeling a sense of belonging with the city due to the language connection.

Last week at work, a casual chat during lunch turned into an opportunity to take a few spoken Kannada classes and get back to making notes once again. A couple of us decided to take up these classes and on a bright Sunday morning, we were all set for our first class.

With a class of 10 and people from all backgrounds, day 1 was very interesting and inspiring. Our teacher has been taking these classes for the last 42 years and it was fun to laugh and learn along.

For my international readers, Kannada is the language spoken in Karnataka, India. For those of you in Bangalore, these classes happen in Hosmat Hospital Canteen. We would be given spoken Kannada lessons every Sunday for three months. The fee is more than affordable. Feel free to reach out to me if you need more details and we could be exchanging notes.

  3. Proud of you! Being a bangalorean since birth, I have come across many “Kannada Gotthillas” in my life who have stayed in Bangalore from more than 5 years and had no desire to learn Kannada.
    Their reply will always be:
    Why should I learn Kannada while people can speak to me in Hindi?
    I don’t see the need to learn Kannada
    Blah blah blah.

    1. Thank you! I think Bangalore is so accepting and warm that without Kannada as well, life is not difficult. I am learning cos I feel language gets you closer to people. Plus, with 10 years here, I want to feel that I belong here and I know the city 🙂

  7. Its fun to learn something new always. My heart is in programming. I am trying to learn some CSS online. I have been planning to take up some class for creative writing /English but procrastinating. Let me see this year.

  8. I have Kannada as part of my New Year plan, but I haven’t actively started working on it. I realize I’ve started or restarted too many things (daily workouts, dance classes, daily Spanish practice, 5 posts a week etc. – all in all, 13 resolutions) that I wasn’t doing last year, so maybe once I get settled into a groove and habit – in February probably.

    But yes, Kannada is definitely on the radar! Where are you taking classes?

  10. I’m so proud of you for doing this. Next time we meet, I’m going to talk to you in Kannada 😀

    I plan to learn driving and swimming this year. Hopefully, will get around it soon.

  11. Very good, Parul. I know few words in Kannada. If I was in Bangalore then I would have learned Kannada by now as I have a lot of Kannadiga friends there. 🙂 All the best to you. I am planning to join a writing course online. Also last year I started learning Spanish in Dualingo but never completed. Maybe this year I will finish it. 🙂

  13. That class sounds amazing!

    I’d really like to learn some form of yoga. I’ve wanted to for years, but I think it’s time I put an actual plan into motion. Thanks for reminding me, and for sharing your awesome new language experience.
