An Open Letter to Honey Singh

For those choicest words in your songs Yo Yo Honey Singh, this video is the most befitted reply.

Rene Sharanaya Verma who composed and performed this 3 minute 30 second rap in front of a small audience of 30 has done a commendable job in using the singer’s style to challenge him.

Her words are bold, inspiring and appropriate so much so that I could not stop myself from sharing this with you!

Quick facts:

  • Rene is a 20-year-old student and works to raise awareness about misogyny in India.
  • This video was performed as a part of Delhi Poetry Slam and the subject was “Portrait of a Lady”.
  • Video went viral and has received over 1.6 million hits till date.

This post is Sunday Punch #55 and I agree to Rene – You women are not just masterpiece, you are the painter too.

  1. Ok, I must admit I have no idea who Honey Singh is but I get the picture. So sick of musicians who don’t think about their lyrics and assume that calling women ‘hos’ and ‘sluts’ and whatever else is ok. I miss music that had sensible lyrics. The downside is people sing these songs without realising what it means. It was a bit like Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines which seemed to suggest that ‘No means yes’ in terms of consent. I know so many people who loved the song but had no clue what the lyrics meant! Do people not hear the words anymore??

  2. I don’t know a thing about Honey Singh as I’m not into modern rap but from what I understand his lyrics are highly distasteful and objectionable and particularly demeaning to women. I’m glad this young girl had the gumption to stand up to public eve teasing which is only what Honey Singh’s songs should be rightly called.

  3. Does seem like the quality of music and lyrics has taken a downswing these days. Wonder If the popular demand is what drives lyricists to pen stuff like this over and over again.

Era of good, clean music may return. I hope so.

  5. There are some good music and lyrics happening, but unfortunately they don’t receive the attention because star-power only sells. Its like the plethora of awards given… aren’t they better actors than the Khans and Kapoors and better movies than theirs’? Good such people are breaking ground. There’s hope.

  7. This one’s quite an interesting reply from Rene.

I guess why people like Honey Singh or for that matter any of the new rapper’s songs is because of the music and the beats. While the lyrics are awful and disgusting to be honest, not many even understand it and that’s where the problem lies. Till the time, people keep liking the music, these guys will keep creating such stuff. It’s like how particular kind of movies and or specific kind of books are written just because they have an audience. Though they may be pretty crappy to be honest.

And since people hear them a lot, these rappers think that the janta actually loves them because they can associate themselves with the lyrics as they believe that this is how youngsters talk! So they seem to think that they are doing a social service by giving music to the thoughts of youngsters today..
