Imagine a day over ten years ago when it was necessary to come together for a cause – think of a women’s cause. If the intent was to mobilize a group of people for a cause, what was the way that time? Publish an advert in the newspaper? Or maybe get it announced on the national TV or radio? Word of mouth? However, this had lower visibility and it was a hard task. Networked Feminism is the answer to it.

Networked Feminism is the answer to it.

Networked feminism is a phenomenon that can be described as the online mobilization and coordination of feminists in response to perceived sexist, misogynistic, racist, and other discriminatory acts against minority groups. – Wikipedia

This is not an initiative by one person or a group but it is the power that internet brings to use the social media and get people together for something that each cares. The power moves from the hands of the one who initiated and goes to the one who shares, thereby making it a chain.

There is a lot of positivity attached to Networked Feminism. The group who comes together for a cause comes from around the world and cuts across all cultures and borders. Then the use of social media, blogging, and video blogging and add to it hashtags made things easier. When one hashtag search can tag results together, one needn’t head out anywhere to understand what’s happening and what the cause warrants.

Feminism doesn’t ask for anything special for women. It asks for equality for women. Not at the expense of men’s rights. As a feminist, on this blog you will find me saying that if a man is allowed to do this, let’s not stop a woman. You will find me asking for rights that men already have but women don’t and that puts a lot of responsibility on us. If you have to mobilize social media, I request you to stay true to the cause and get involved only if you truly believe in it.  In my mind, that’s the right away to bring the change we wish to see.

I am blogging from A to Z during April  and the theme I have chosen is set on women. I am also a minion on co-host Pam’s Unconventional Alliance along with Claire, Shalini and Rajlakshmi. Visit us, show us some love and don’t leave without sharing your thoughts.

  1. And that is how the change would be possible in a positive way, in a subtle way. I too believe the same. If something is for men, then why is it not for women? What harm or wrong can it possibly do?

  2. Networking via the Internet has changed the way we connect for a cause. It has definitely made awareness accessible to every nook and corner of the world allowing people to voice their stories that have really helped clear the air around feminism in more ways than that was possible say ten years from now.
Your theme for the A to Z Challenge too is part of networked feminism, inspiring so many of us daily.

  3. I just am not able to imagine how people or women came together to fight for a cause before the telecom/internet revolution. Were there any feminist revolutions taking place in India at that time, I have no idea. Thanks to social media and the hash tag revolution that in these times it is easier to create awareness by expression and action on issues holding back women.
