“Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which increases earthquakes,” – Source
Jennifer was annoyed by this statement and what she thought was just a funny reply, she published a blogpost that suggested women dress immodestly on 26 April, 2010 to test the cleric’s claims. In a jest, she named the project – ‘Boobquake’. It was supposed to be a simple scientific experiment. If women dress immodestly on a particular day and come together, the Earth should tremble.
The idea became viral and social media played the part – 200,000 women joined the event in attires that they individually considered immodest. In New York, where being topless is not a crime, women came out bare chest. Being a scientist, Jennifer did not let the data go waste. On the morning of April 27th she analyzed and the results came out as expected.
Provocative dressing has nothing to do with the frequency of earthquakes.
You can read more about the probability and science of the experiment here.
When we hear things that are not right we react and show discontentment but what Jennifer did was amazing. She used her education and instead of writing a post about how annoyed that statement made her, she scientifically proved that such statements have no base. Data is smart enough to refute charges.
I am blogging from A to Z during April and the theme I have chosen is set on women. I am also a minion on co-host Pam’s Unconventional Alliance along with Claire, Shalini and Rajlakshmi. Visit us, show us some love and don’t leave without sharing your thoughts.
That’s funny. But then the original premise was ridiculous. How they get away with it I will never know. Oh, wait – maybe someone sent them it on facebook 😉
Lovely theme – well done!

Wow, this is way cool! Of course, the original statement is outrageous but boobquake is such an intriguing response.

This made me go, Oh, womaniya…aha womaniya! Seriously how can people make such statements? I am glad with the way Jennifer handled this negativity with her brilliant idea.

I marvel at the ingenuity that makes people come up with things that deride, insinuate and humiliate women! How ridiculous is that to think that women’s way of dressing has something to do with earthquakes. Good one to share in your post, Parul.

Ha ha… I love Jennifer already! And what a smart way to shut everyone’s mouth!
I literally had to read twice to understand the statement! I mean, seriously? Wearing provocative clothes leads to earthquakes… R.I.P education!
Thanks for bringing this to the light Parul 🙂
Cheers
