In a distant village in South India, technology is changing lives. What may appear simple to you and me, has become an idea generator for the women of this small village in Tamil Nadu. A mobile connection and voicemail service have helped the women of Theni to set up their own company.

Known as voicemail farmers, these women from Theni are not educated to know much about the techniques of goat rearing but that hasn’t stopped them from progressing. Taking advice from experts over voice mails, these women are mastering the art of rearing goats in a scientific manner.

Early this year, around 1200 women goat farmers started their own company. The capital was 1000 INR contributed by each woman and Theni District Goat Farmers Producer Company Limited was founded. The company will procure medicines and fodder for goats and sell matured goats for good prices without any interference from the middlemen. The profit earned will be shared as dividend amongst the team.

This is the power of teamwork and leveraging technology to make lives better. This is not just an inspiring story for me. It tells me that even when things are not ideal or per the rule book, they can be molded into something better. Will is what is needed to do something impactful. Everything else falls into place by itself.

I am blogging from A to Z during April  and the theme I have chosen is set on women. I am also a minion on co-host Pam’s Unconventional Alliance along with Claire, Shalini, and Rajlakshmi. Visit us, show us some love and don’t leave without sharing your thoughts.

  2. We learn about entrepreneurship training and formation of various business organizations in Commerce. I think this is the best example we can give of women who wish to enter the business world. They are using technology to the best of their ability, and hopefully making a good dividend too!
Thanks for sharing this, Parul 🙂

  4. I don’t know much about others, but females in rural India have definitely empowered themselves. 1200 of them coming together for this is just amazing. Shows the kind of determination they have to make it work. Hats off!

  5. It is so great to hear that technology is helping Indian women getting ahead in the business world in India. It may seem like a small step, but a small step is always a big step and I’m sure many more opportunities will open up for these women as a result. In a sense, they are generating their own opportunities with what they’ve been given 🙂
