Reproductive Health is every woman’s right. The choice to become a mother is a personal one but there are countries and laws that are not so easy on women. Bringing contraceptives, reproductive counselling and non-surgical abortions to women where restrictive laws prohibit them, is the goal of this organisation.
Women on Waves started in 1999 and is the brainchild of a Dutch doctor Rebecca Gomperts. Services to women are provided on a ship, on international waters where the local laws do not apply and this is legal. Sometimes women need professional help and WoW sets up sessions and training for women to support them.
There are sad stories around the world of rape victims, those who had unwanted pregnancies and the hardships they face. WoW is set up to deal with medical emergencies and women are required to make appointments. When the ship sails in their area, they are taken on board to 12 miles away when the local laws cease to apply and are given safe medicines to terminate the pregnancy or provide contraceptives. The reproductive health is maintained a priority by trained doctors and nurses.
Not for profit and funded by donations from all over the world, reading about this venture made me happy. To do good and to make a difference, all we need is intent and rest all can fall into place. When we can do the needful on water, we can sure do it on land.

Absolutely! I believe only a woman has the right to decide about her body. No one should be taking decisions for her, unless ofcourse, it’s a medically relevant decision. Women should be free to use contraceptives, and even get an abortion. It’s her life for crying out loud! They shouldn’t be made to feel selfish and stigmatised by society, rather their decisions should be respected.

It truly is a unique idea! It’s anyday better than women being forced to go to quacks or some nurse for an abortion in unhygienic conditions!

This reminded me of Savita Halappanavar, who died due to septic miscarriage and that was because MTP is not legal in Ireland. WoW is such a thoughtful initiative and so very much needed!! Kudos to the team!!

Being a woman is difficult in so many parts of the world. Women should totally be in control of their reproductive system; especially if they are forced into something not of their own choosing.
