An Open Gym

Bangalore has many firsts to its name and the recent addition is Open Gym. Last year, a park near my locality went under renovation and beautification. After months of wait, the park was opened to the public and I loved the change.

An open gym was added to the park.

A simple concept that helps people improve their lifestyle for free. There are no heavy-duty machines in this gym, no treadmills or elliptical trainers as well. Just some basic mechanical equipments supported by well thought and placed hinges and springs.

What a fun way to introduce gymming to the people of Bangalore!

This morning on my walk, I saw people using this to the full. Some were waiting to grab a chance and some were trying them all one after the other. They needed no personal instructor and no air-conditioned physical spaces. The yellows and the reds made such a bright combination that the place looked very vibrant.

Add to all that the simplicity of the users. There were no gym bags, no stylish clothing or music plugged into ears. The natural green surroundings, birds, the cool breeze and the intent is all it took to make this place beaming with energy. I loved my hour walking and watching these folks.

Has your city got an open gym like this?

  1. Yes, many parks in the UK have these open gyms, but I never see many people using them. That may be down to the usually poor weather we have here in the UK.
Thank you so much for participating in my weekly photo challenge.

  2. We need more open gym parks! We don’t have any in my area, but I saw one in Vancouver Canada when my boyfriend and I went there to visit. It was right next to the beach volleyball which was pretty cool.

  4. Such a lovely idea to have an open gym! They should have more of these around all populor parks…maybe right next to childrens’ park, that will keep everyone engaged. 😉

  5. Wow! I love this idea! No, our town doesn’t have something like this, but I wish it did. Thanks for sharing the lovely, colorful photo, although it increased my jealousy! 😉

  6. It’s good to know your local government cares about the health of its citizens. Our Municipal Corporators have put up a few open gyms by the seaside but these are mostly used by locals who look frighteningly like bar bouncers. So the rest of us have to make do with the daily obstacle course provided gratis by our Municipality with its pathetic roads and frequent diversions because of ‘Road Repairs ‘ !

  7. Sorry to say that Parul, but my city still hasn’t got an open gym yet. Though renovation of parks and ponds are going on these days, but I wonder if I am not getting an open gym like this I either need to shift to Bangalore or I have to learn swimming to dive into those renovated and deepened ponds.

    1. Bangalore has many gardens and I heard that many parks are getting these open gyms. I feel more and more cities should try this. A good thing. Thanks for stopping by, Janak.

  8. This is such an innovative kind of gym. I’ve never even seen it hear in Australia. To be honest, it looks a bit like a playground – but one for adults to play around and get fit in the process 😀 It looks like you can walk right up there anytime you want and have a go at it. But I’m guessing because of the warm climate over there, it is most popular in the early mornings or early evenings.

  9. It is wonderful isn’t it? I think there is one around Koramangala as well. I’ve heard about it but I have never been there. Now that you have told me about this one, it is time for me to explore the one close to me.

  10. This is a wonderful idea, especially for those of us who are lazy and not so inclined to exercise. 🙂 I’ve never seen anything like this here. Might not be practical, because they would have to be closed in the winter.

  11. I am finding your blog for the first time on the Summer Road Trip. I like the incentive to keep finding new bloggers. What a great idea this Open Gym is. I live in a North Carolina locale that is busy with a revitalization program. I will share your photo. Thank you. I have been remembering a summer time growing up and written a series of June posts hoping to help others remember what summer was once about. Let me know what you think if you have time to drive by.

  12. That looks like such a fun open gym especially because it’s so colorful that it looks like a playground! That’s okay though, it will entice the inner child in adults to workout because the fun and playful colors does not make it look like a gym at all!

  15. I have seen something like this in Singapore and I must say the various colours in the open gym in Bangalore make it even more enticing and attractive :D. Nice way to promote healthy living among people. Hope they open more such spaces in cities across India and the world.

  16. Yes!! I love the open gyms in London!

I am always a bit embarrassed to use them when there are lots of people nearby, but I always have a play if it’s early in the morning! 😀
