“If it doesn’t scare you, it won’t change you.” ~ Anonymous
Do you get butterflies in your stomach when you try something new or different?
I do.
If you don’t, you can look at the picture below and move on. Let me know how you deal with change and I am sure I can learn. The rest of the post may not feel worthy enough of a read.
Coming back to the point I was making, when ever I have taken up a new job, presented in front of a new audience or done something out of my comfort zone, I get scared. Attempting to dive and drive still scares me.
But feeling scared is a good thing and you know why? Because what ever may be the outcome, you will come out of it feeling that you learnt something new about yourself. You may also feel a sense of calm. The satisfaction of having tried.
When VT and I plan our road trips, we are scared. To be honest, I am more scared than him. There is uncertainty of being on the road and that anything could happen. There are no plans to fall back to and there is no one else. But these trips make us learn many things about each other and also about the places we go. I fell sick in Rajasthan and then our car’s tyre busted in Meghalaya. But we managed it. Sure things went south but we were able to handle. That counts, isn’t it?
When we trekked to the living double root bridge in Cherapunji, it was an arduous one. On the way, we crossed this iron bridge. It shook with our weights and swung too. Crossing that bridge was an achievement as it brought us a step closer to our destination.
It changed us and we realized that when we reached home. Walk that step and let it scare you. Because it will then change you.

I am participating in the third edition of BarAthon and today is day 3. You will see me running a marathon of photo/travel posts on this space from July 2-15 every other day. Have a good time!

Agree with your thought. Any thing that’s new and isnt in our comfort zone seems scary at first. But once you take the first step, it gets easier and better after that and pretty soon you start enjoying that new experience. Also before you know it, this new experience widens your comfort zone. And the learnings from such new experiences make for some awesome stories!!

It is essential to come out of our comfort zone and challenge ourself. Sometimes we end up surprising ourself with the outcome.
Also, our last vacation was in Shillong few months back. Your writing brought back beautiful memories from Shillong and Cherrapunji.

Always hard to take that first step. But feel the fear and do it anyway … except of course bungy jumping!

I like thinking that too. When I was a teenager was crippled with fear but I am past that in many ways now thankfully. Nice post x

There is always a little fear in me when I move outside a comfort zone. I have been having a low level anxiety since moving to Germany. It’s all new, and very exiting, but also a little scary for me.

Sometimes I feel bold, and easily take on a big challenge. Other times, I feel nervous doing simple tasks, like making a phone call or asking for help in a shop!

All the time, Parul! I am.so bad with change and it scares the hell out of me. But most of the times it doesn’t show on my face how scared I am. As you said, takita that step, though scary always help in learning a bit more about us. Then there is the joy that is waiting once we come out in the other side successfully, right? Having said that, I’m not ready to dive from a plane or ride on rollercoaster anytime soon. 😀

Oh yes. I get dead scared at trying new things. While I do understand it is important to step out of your comfort zone it is a hard thing to do. And yet sometimes it is so very rewarding – that feeling of having achieved something is priceless. That bridge must have been scary.
