It was a beautiful Saturday morning on December 28, 2010. Rajdhani Express had arrived at the Bangalore City Railway station and VT and I were ‘home’ bound. That day I was exactly fifteen days married and we were headed to this house I had been many times before we left to get married. However, this time the feelings of entering the house were very different. As VT was unlocking the door, I knew this house will eventually turn into our home.
As we opened the door, to our surprise the house was decorated and this little calendar was right there. Our friend GK had landed before us and she had done her wonderful bit to welcome us as a couple into the house. Coyly smiling and sitting on the mattress I reached out for this calendar. As I flipped the pages, all memories of my wedding came in front of my eyes. My picture with my Nani, my parents and brother, VT’s parents, entire larger family and yes ours while exchanging rings. Twelve unique pictures for each month and this calendar was the most thoughtful gift ever.
In the form of calendar, these were the only set of pictures I had at that time. It was a New Year calendar and we were to see the 12 months of our first year together with these pictures. As months passed by, I finally got to see my wedding album and CD. But this calendar has since then remained my favorite. On January 1, 2012 I set it again on the refrigerator and never took it off. Even today, almost after 4.5 years of being married, this calendar sits on its usual place and I change it every month without bothering that the dates and days are far away from the present.
I cherish this calendar not because this contains my wedding pictures but the thought that marriage is only as old as you make of it. As newly weds there is the charm of a new life together. There is the willingness to be at our best behavior. There is a ‘first’ in what ever we attempt. As years pass, people become complacent. The charm is not that charm as it used to be. The daily grind of life takes its own toll. This little table calendar helps me fight that. It reminds me of the day when I looked into his eyes and exchanged rings and he was looking into mine. The day we quietly promised to hold each other’s hand come what may. The day we prayed for a better life and years of togetherness. The day we both thought,
Till death do us part..

aww… this is lovely. And you are right… each month would bring a new pic and a new reminder of the good times from the marriage days… thus lasting a whole year

Thank you for participating in the Cherished Blogfest, Parul. You’re so right, once the charm of the honeymoon phase wears off, marriage is hard work, and we need constant reminders of what and who we’re working so hard for.
