Not very long ago, walls were painted, some social media icons drawn up, a colorful table was set and a carpet was rolled out to do up a school. Within six months of fund-raising, the school is now functional and first of its kind in Afghanistan. Code <to> Inspire.
A unique concept and an idea to help women set foot in something different from just teaching.
Code to Inspire is a registered non-profit that is committed to educating female students in Afghanistan and improving their technical literacy by teaching them how to code so that they can find future employment as a freelancer and get involved in entrepreneurship and technological innovations.
Imagine a place where people are not open about educating daughters. A place where schools are destroyed or girls are married off early to procreate. For a girl who studies well and wants to be financially independent, becoming a teacher is the easiest career option. One, the students are all females and second the profession is respectable in the eyes of society.
Code to Inspire, gives another career path to these girls. They learn to code and try their hands on website designing, create animation and graphics, work on mobile apps and learn a computer language. As a science graduate, they are getting an opportunity to learn something that can be used in the job market. This could eventually give them free lancing options from the comfort of their home.
It’s a great step towards making the Afghani women believe in themselves and their capabilities. Imagine when a man plays a game on his mobile phone that was actually developed by a female, what would he think? His views would change for good. There will be more respect in what women can do other in other spheres than just within the four walls of the house.
Code to Inspire is hope and if you believe in the idea, spread the word!
I am blogging from A to Z during April and the theme I have chosen is set on women. I am also a minion on co-host Pam’s Unconventional Alliance along with Claire, Shalini and Rajlakshmi. Visit us, show us some love and don’t leave without sharing your thoughts.
A great initiative. I’ve read about the women in Afghanistan and this seems like a perfect idea – acceptable and respectable. A good place to make a start.

Parul what an inspiring theme and great to read your posts everyday. Afghanistan needs every hand in support to rebuild and holds a soft spot with me having been deeply associated with India from the ancient past 🙂

As always, the girl child pays the highest price of war and ignorance. This is a very laudable project. Thanks for bringing it to our notice, Parul.

Don’t you think you need Code to Inspire for old women like me too? Of course we will pay for it, but I do wish there is someone out there who will have the patience to explain coding to old brains… We need to be empowered too!
Computer literacy should be imparted to everyone – not just the young . Infact old people need it more because they have to keep asking young ones to read out stuff ( they can’t see without specs) , type in stuff ( buttons are too small) and even help with filling forms ( they don’t know what all those commands mean….)

This is such a great initiative. I can’t imagine what it’d be like to have very few opportunities at studying and getting a career because of simply my gender. It’s great that Code to Inspre allows women to enter a field of work that is dominated by males even in the western world.

Coding is truly an exciting career, and is actually a great step to make Afghani women more self-reliant.
They could also develop apps which would help increase women safety. Like, an application for maps with the necessary details of safe local transportation routes, etc.
A great initiative, and it’s nice that you shared it today. Perfect for Monday Motivation! 🙂

It’s sad that a world exists where girls education is talked in hushed tones. I feel bad for the girls who are missing out so many things. Beautiful initiative.

Wow Parul! That indeed is a fantastic initiative and to write about it is another beautiful thing. I’m surprised, in a good way to know about this venture in Afghanistan, otherwise, all we hear is how pathetic the state is, what is happening, how women were killed and so on.
Kudos to you for bringing it the light.. 🙂
Cheers
