Have you thought of living in some other city or country? I haven’t given this a lot of thought in the past. However, over the last month, this thought has crossed my mind umpteen times.
I think of things like value towards human life, healthcare, focus on nature, support for those who are poor and the most important one at the moment is handling of the ongoing pandemic.
I stumbled upon this video and a study by The Economist and here is what they had to say. These 5 are the best cities in the world to live.
- Auckland, New Zealand
- Osaka, Japan
- Adelaide, Australia
- Wellington, New Zealand
- Tokyo, Japan
Tell me if you already live in one of these cities and what’s your take on the fact?

Yes, my city made the list! lol Wellington is #4. I think NZ cities did so well this year because of our COVID free status, but we have all those other things to varying extents (public health care and good hospitals, human rights, lots of native bush and the hills and harbour and coast to explore, etc). We don’t live here because of the weather (Wellington is windy – though that means our air is very fresh too!), and there are lots of news articles these days about house prices and rental prices going up and up (though not as bad as Auckland). Oh, and we live on a faultline! But it is small and easy to get around, with a vibrant arts and culture scene, is politically interesting, and lots of great cafes and restaurants.
However, as we’re almost retired, and no longer have elderly relatives living in this city, we can now choose to live pretty much anywhere. I have dreams (if COVID is ever over) of living in other places for up to a year or so – Europe so I can explore, Thailand again for the food and people but near the beach, etc. But I’ll always return to New Zealand. Where here, though? That’s what my husband and I need to figure out!

I would think smaller towns (not cities) are better to live in, but that may depend on your stage of life. I was cool with Mumbai when I lived there in 1985-86. Maybe not today. Harihar – a small town – offered the best quality of life in my experience so far. We had an 18 hole Golf course at our disposal, may be that swung it for me!

I know Mumbai is not the best city in the world to live in, but this is where I want to live for the rest of my life, however much it sucks! I can’t think of any other place, for here’s where I have been all my life.

I wish I could visit NZ and stay there for a while.
When I was in Chennai, I thought that was the best and had always wanted to be there. Then, travelled out of country for the first time and was amazed by the lifestyle outside. Medical is really slow in the UK, and the weather will drive you nuts(love that the locals joke about it all the time). I would give it a high five for the schools, for the recreation facilities and the vibrant environment here. We stay 2 hours away from London, in Coventry, but I love that it is close to Scotland, Cornwall, Birmingham and Southampton (Places that I wanted to visit when I planned to come here first.)
My good friend lives in Auckland and when I enquired her about Corona, she said that they were COVID Free! So, that place is already on my list to visit once in a lifetime. My cousin was in Adelaide, now in Perth, but he talks a lot about medical being amazing at their place. So, when thinking about it, I do not know if we could settle outside at the moment, but it is worth staying out to work and extending it for a while.

I love it here in Phoenix. But to be honest, I loved everywhere I lived – Kerala, Bangalore, UK. Each place had its own merits and demerits. For now, I am happy with being in Phoenix. 🙂 I would love to visit New Zealand once.

I’ve considered living in a different city or country, and realized that for all its flaws – of which there are many – I love India. I don’t think I would want to leave unless there were extenuating circumstances. I wouldn’t mind changing cities, though! Goa is an option that has crossed my mind a couple of times.

I do live in Egypt. In general, I think that one needs to live in a place and travel everywhere …

I realized the importance of health care last year when my husband got sick. It was really overwhelming to see how much the govt cared about its citizens. If I have to choose it would be health care on top of my list.
Relocation is a life changing decision and I am very happy I made this choice.
