To her surprise, the call was from St. Anthony’s Public School and the mother in her started imagining a hundred things. She quickly answered the call and heard that this was a voice recorded message informing her about Roohi’s upcoming tests. Breathing a sigh of relief, Tara got back to work though her mind kept wandering throughout the entire day.
They say that when you love your job, you stop feeling how long you have been working. It was around six months of being hired and today Jennifer was being recognized as a Budding Talent on the team. Tara was happy with her assessment of Jennifer’s potential and when partners nominated Jennifer for an award just within 6 months of her joining BBC; Tara’s confidence in her own abilities as a leader took a leap of faith. Slowly, Tara started getting closer to Jennifer who she fondly addressed as Jenny. Though they worked together, this was the first time Tara was watching where to draw the line. It was not easy handling a friend at work place but Tara was no amateur. Jenny also trended cautiously and knew how to keep emotions away from workplace. She had already started admiring Tara and it seemed there was a natural connection. So, when Tara invited Jenny for a brunch over the weekend, Jenny couldn’t say no.
That Saturday morning, Jenny was out on a jog on bandstand and she was trying to time herself for an upcoming Mumbai Marathon. She missed the Western Ghats but charm of jogging on the shore of the Arabian Sea was a riveting feeling in itself. After one round, she was completely exhausted and sat on a rock facing the sea. The wind in her hair, the little moisture and the chirping birds were slowly helping her calm down and breathe normally. Looking at the rising Sun, Jenny wanted to hold hands, rest her head on his shoulder and just watch the Sun taking its place in the sky. Even after so many years and trying so hard, she yearned for a closure. She missed Darius. Suddenly, the loud horn that blew just behind her back, took her by surprise. She turned around to see the taxi driver fixing something in the cab as the passenger came out. Then the guy cursed the cab driver and started the usual road rage. The Sun was rising behind Jenny’s head and amidst the chaos around, she was lost in her thoughts and felt lonely.
Jenny looked at her watch and realized it was already 10, and if she did not reach home in time, she would get late to the brunch at Tara’s. At Tara’s apartment, Shekhar was out with some novelist friends and Roohi, Tara and Jenny were getting to know each other. Jenny was impressed by the way Tara had maintained her apartment. It was such a classic combination of modern artifacts with ethnic décor that Jenny could not stop complimenting Tara. It seemed that her house was telling a tale by itself. After a long time, this Saturday seems so relaxing and full of happy moments. She had Jenny to share and talk, check out some stuff online, talk about life in general and of course the brunch. Roohi also liked having JA (Jenny Aunty) at home. She showed JA her doll house, her new teddy and a latest scrap-book that she started maintaining. While laying the table for brunch, Tara was happy that Roohi is having some company. Unlike other friends, Jenny was genuinely playing with the 9-year-old and in spite of the chaos and fun, there was peace within. It seemed like two and half women setup and the three literally let their hair down. Jenny had got her best friend, her cam along and she was not letting moment go without capturing. Roohi’s innocence was filling up not just the memory card but her heart too.
Time just flew by with all the fun during the afternoon and soon the Sun was setting. Tara asked Roohi to stop watching Scooby-Do and get back to books. Roohi had a fun day and her exams were round the corner. So it was time for some studies. Shekhar was not home yet and Jenny had left too.
With a coffee in her hand and looking at the Sun by the balcony, Tara was in complete agreement with life’s uncertainties and she knew that when man proposes, God disposes. She had heard these lines somewhere and they felt so right at this moment. Life is like moving from one room to the other and every room has a set of people; sometimes you move to the next room with people from the previous ones and sometimes you leave people behind to meet new ones. It was that one moment for her. She was finding a new friend in Jenny but the day to reveal the truth to Roohi one day was also now not far. She never wanted that day to come but it was drawing closer. For once, she had no control.
